History and Background of Vinos De La Cruz

Vinos De La Cruz is the oldest winery in Uruguay, and an ancient eighteenth century winery. The only one of it’s kind. Situated 100 kilometres from Montivedeo, Florida. It is a family company of about 60 hectares of vineyards. It is the only winery in the world that is the producer of sugarless organic wines that are certified suitable for people with diabetes.

Following the boom of the US environmental move in the 1990’s, half of the vineyard became organic using only natural methods without chemical fertilizers or the synthesis process.

In 2002, a diabetic discovered the wine and thought that its organic properties could be taken without prejudice to ones health. As the consumption of the organic wine did not affect blood glucose levels, the owner was approached about the experience. Mr Arocena then conducted a laboratory analysis on the wines.

The organic process ensures the good health of the grapes. The yeast of the grape transforms the entire sugar into alcohol without altering the therapeutic benefits of the wines and qualities such as colour, alcohol level, acidity, carbohydrates, levels of energy protein and flavourings.

The laboratory analysis indicated that there was no sugar in any of the wines. The wines were then certified by the Uruguayan Diabetes Association, Juvenile Diabetes Association of Sao Paulo, Brazil, US Food and Drug Administration approved, United States Department of Agriculture and International Process Organization of Certification.

On 20 April at the last congress of Diabetology held in Denmark they were able to establish the qualities of the wines and the absence of sugar. The wines are currently undergoing certification by the International Diabetes Association.

Today the winery has 48 employees and turns over a million dollars. It produces 600,000 bottles per annum and 95% of its production is to export. It is currently being exported to United States, Japan, the Caribbean, United Kingdom, Spain and Italy.

Exportation has commenced to Australia and New Zealand for the first time and the wines will be available on the market by Christmas.


The Wines from Vinos De La Cruz

Pinot Noir : 100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11,4%, Acidity: 3,50g/l, Sugar: 0g
A dry, medium bodied red varietal wine of good structure obtained from the elaboration of Pinot Noir grapes, originated in Bourgogne, cultivated and organic certified from natural and handmade harvest. Intense aroma with a gentle herbal touch, complex and rounded. A wine to enjoy!

Merlot : 100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11,4%, Acidity: 3,50g/l, Sugar: 0g
A dry, red varietal wine obtained from the elaboration of Merlot grapes, cultivated and organic certified from natural and handmade harvest. Ruby in colour with excellent perfume. It has its own characteristic aroma of the grape and therefore its flavour. Smooth and velvety wine where the wine drinker immediately discovers the quality of its grape.

Malbec : 100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11,4%, Acidity: 3,50g/l, Sugar: 0g
A dry, red varietal wine obtained from the elaboration of Malbec grapes, from the Bordeaux region, cultivated and organic certified from natural and handmade harvest. With lilac tones that recall violet and fruit flavours. Described as an excellent wine with compact flavour, pleasant and persistent tannins.

Cabernet Sauvignon : 100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11,4%, Acidity: 3,50g/l, Sugar: 0g
Vigorous variety of late sprout, that adapts to temperate climates. An intense red colour wine is obtained, with violet shades, and intense aroma with a gentle herbal touch. It is a varietal with multiple qualities. The Nancy Oak barrel is the great ingredient that shows off its structure and body. Recommended to match with baked and grilled meats.

Muscat D'Hamburg : 100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11%, Acidity: 3,50g/l, Sugar: 0g
A dry, rosé varietal wine obtained from the elaboration of Muscat D’Hamburg grapes, one of the world’s tastes, that with its aroma makes it a very special one. Cultivated and organic certified from natural and handmade harvest. A smooth wine recommended for appetizers and after dinners and appreciated by many for its exquisite palate.

Eco Brut Sparkling Wine Limited Edition 2 :
100% Varietal, Alcohol: 11.6%, Acidity: 3.90g/l, Sugar: 0g
Natural sparkling wine elaborated from ecological certified white wine and sweetened with natural ecological Stevia Rebaudiana. This is a macerated product from the leaves of this same plant. Adding no sugar makes it ideal for diabetics.

WHITES: Arriloba, Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay will be available mid 2009
